Listening in Relationships

Intimacy, communication, compromise … the list flows endlessly when we arrive at the work of relationships. In thinking about what is universally applicable – my mind settles on “listening.” To “listen.” This simple yet profound act is about “giving attention with the ear.” Perhaps it could be thought about as human warmth, “an embrace with one’s ear.” Full bodied. Listening is giving attention with one’s mind, one’s heart—one’s everything really. The act of listening in our intimate relationships, though, can take a distinctive turn—as slight as the move of...

when courage is lost – the fatal wound

It happened to me. I started to care about what others thought of my writing and images. There is so much tension in this space.  It feels like an internal log jam of the soul.  In one moment my heart would burst open with a moment of pure sweetness that I wanted to express and in a flash the internal critic/editor would say … but “what will they think”. Rumi’s poem on Life and Death popped immediately to mind. I’ve included an excerpt.  Is worth a moment to reflect how you are living as if this is the last. look at love how it tangles with the one fallen in love look at spirit how it fuses with earth giving it new life why are you so busy with this or that or good or bad pay attention to how things blend why talk about all the known and...

Falling in Love: Lessons from a slug

Posted by on May 1, 2012 in inspirations, media bar | 1 comment

There is something special about the moment just after a big rainfall.  Today’s moment was an encounter with slugs and when I say slugs I’m talking hundreds.  I was out exploring a new running path next to some wet lands.  My run quickly turned into a walking obstacle course as I dodged these little invertebrate beings.  Eventually, I settled into a rhythm as I slowed my pace and became enamored with the variety of colors, shapes and iridescent trails.   As my pace slowed I also became more aware of the people around me – their eyes, hair movement in the wind, musings...

Medicine for the Soul

The soul is a mysterious space.  For some, music can be an elixir to invite the soul to reveal its longings.  David is one of my favorite musical artists. Enjoy!
